What's a Pan Dowdy?

Schuster and dowdies, crisps and crumbles, buckles and betties what all these desserts?

With a little help from American Desserts by Wayne Brachman, we thought we give you the answers, because you are just dying to know.

Schuster: Schuster are desserts with a syrupy fruit filling topped with biscuits or cake.

Pan Dowdies: These have pie crust on top, are broken and dipped in the fruit filling after baking.

ChipsCrumbles: This well-known desserts such as pie fillings with streusel topping, often with nuts. A sharp fall is one to crumble and is a crisp.

Buckles Buckles: Cakes are the sink, and rise and buckle like to bake them. Our Caramel Swirl crumb cake is really a buckle buckles with the caramel topping the cake as it bakes.

Betties: We remember apple betties from our childhood. Betties are fruit and crumbs layered desserts.

Shortcakes: These are biscuits, often rich or sweetened biscuits are topped with fruit and whipped cream. Our Strawberry Shortcake recipe is an authentic recipe shortcake recipe for a white cake covered with strawberries and cream.

Grunts and slumps: These are fruit dumplings and cooked food on the stove. They say the fruit is booming, "as it cooks and the dumplings" break "down into the stuffing. (We already have them from camp, but we've never heard of the fruit of "grunt".)
